Nutrition †Food Essay

In our today’s society, particularly western nations, the issue of cheap food is by all accounts at the highest point of each wellbeing related discussion. As these discussions become progressively dubious, the subject of who bears the obligation stays unanswered. In his paper, Don’t Blame the Eater, David Zinczenko endeavors to respond to this key inquiry by putting the more noteworthy duty of America’s weight and other inexpensive food related medical problems on the cheap food ventures. In spite of Zinczenko’s contention, Raldy Balko, in his exposition, What You Eat Is Your Business, expresses that, individuals should take responsibility for wellbeing and prosperity, and are thusly answerable for what and how they eat. Albeit both Zinczenko and Balko address the issue of duty, however with differentiate, yet legitimate contentions, Zinczenko appears to introduce an all the more persuading contention because of the manner by which he clarifies the governmental issues of food, the manner by which our ways of life are adjusted by what we eat, and things we can do to change the manner in which we see food and its job in our lives. In spite of the fact that Zinczenko consider buyers capable to a degree, he accuses the inexpensive food ventures for the increasing pace of heftiness and other medical problems identified with cheap food because of their inability to give marks to their items. Zinczenko convincingly underpins his case by taking note of factual information that shows the ascent in cash spent to treat diabetes. â€Å"Before 1994, diabetes in youngsters was for the most part brought about by a hereditary issue just 5 percent of youth cases were heftiness related, or Type 2 diabetes. Today, as indicated by the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes represents in any event 30 percent of all new youth instances of diabetes in this country†(Zinczenko 392). He contends that, if the inexpensive food organizations are managed with the goal that they are answerable for their food substance, by giving appropriate marks, than customers will settle on educated food decisions. In spite of Zinczenko, Balko contends that what one eats ought to involve moral duty. To Balko’s credit, I accept that individuals should assume individual liability for their wellbeing by including a reasonable eating routine and exercise to their schedules. Where I vary from Balko is the point at which he says that administration limitations on food are an aftereffect of individuals settling on helpless food decisions. As per Balko, â€Å"a society where everybody is liable for everybody else’s prosperity is a general public progressively well-suited to acknowledge government restrictions† (397). I think Balko’s contention in such manner, is an egotistical one, and is an endeavor to absolve the rich from paying a considerable amount of duties that would some way or another advantage poor people or some center families who can't manage the cost of the significant expense of medical coverage. Both Zinczenko and Balko appear to concur on the rising wellbeing costs that are by one way or another a consequence of inexpensive food, these two creators appear to vary on reasons. Zinczenko contends that medicinal services cost is on the ascent on account of infections brought about by inexpensive food because of the disappointment of cheap food organizations to give marks and that purchasers ought not be fault for it. Nonetheless, Balko contends that it is so that, we permit the â€Å"government to interfere with us and our waistline† (396). Balko states that, the more the administration keeps on financing medical problems that are immediate property of helpless food/wellbeing decisions, the more individuals will keep on feasting on cheap food and draw in not in a successful eating regimen and exercise routine. (398) The development of the cheap food industry and the rate at which inexpensive food is devoured is so quick, and its going with dangers of stoutness and related cardiovascular ailments have gotten a cultural plague. Zinczenko accuses the cheap food businesses for the spring in the rate to which corpulence have developed in the United States. Despite the fact that Zinczenko is directly about the increasing pace of stoutness, and that the utilization of cheap food shapes some portion of its etiology, the proposal of his contention can't be demonstrated and thusly can't frame the reason for his cases against the inexpensive food organizations since there are other contributing elements with respect to the reason, beginning, and movement of heftiness. Stoutness is likewise organically connected. These organic attributors include: hereditary qualities, hormones, proteins, and nutrients and minerals. A few people have fat in their qualities that, regardless of what they do, they are simply fat. Others have issues with hormonal irregular characteristics or potentially deficient enzymatic activities that would help in the sufficient processing and ingestion of specific nourishments. Cheap food is only one of the numerous natural traits related with heftiness. So Zinczenko can precisely present his defense against the inexpensive food businesses for giving names in order to empower customers settle on educated food decisions and not an instance of corpulence. At times, individuals are too quick to even consider passing judgment on others, particularly individuals that are large. I am similarly liable of the allegation myself. I fill in as an attendant at a nursing home office and, as a rule, when staff part comes to me whining of migraine, first thing I state to them is; let’s check your circulatory strain and, God prohibit, the pulse is raised, or if that individual simply look fat to me, my next remark is, it is a result of all the garbage you eat. My judgment, however might be mistaken, depends on the way that a large portion of these staff individuals are single guardians, live in downtowns, and have an absolute drive time of two hours to and from work. Also, some of them have more than one occupation. Be that as it may, these individuals are being caused to feel liable about something that is absolutely out their control. In many examples, their wages aren’t sufficiently even to get together with their rents and utilities bills. Inexpensive food comes convenient in such occasion where one can burn through ten dollars and get ten cheeseburgers to take care of a group of three to five as opposed to setting off to the market where each solid fixing is practically proportionate to the cost of the whole supper containing cheap food. Individuals count on inexpensive food since it is modest. Zinczenko clarifies that his folks were separated and that he needed to live with his mom who worked extended periods of time just to make the month to month bills. â€Å"Lunch and supper, for me, was an every day decision between McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Pizza Hut. † (Zinczenko 391). In Zinczenko’s case, his way of life is changed in light of the fact that cheap food is his solitary alternative since his family is useless. His single parent needs to strive to take care of tabs and give him a feast. It doesn’t matter the sort of dinner. A supper is a dinner, particularly for somebody who doesn’t have the opportunity to set up a home prepared feast. The individuals beset with cheap food related heftiness are not to fault for what they eat on the grounds that they have next to no or no alternatives in regards to what they eat because of the entirety of the above reasons. In any case, to Balko’s point, while individuals might not have the choice about what they eat, they have the choice to control how they eat. Zinczenko states in his exposition that cheap food is â€Å"the just accessible alternatives for an American child to get a moderate meal†, thus, he asks his perusers not to â€Å"blame the Eater† (392). However, as with Zinczenko, we are very much aware of the job cheap food play in our lives. We get that, however quick might be one, or the main accessible supper decision that we have, the manner in which we eat can assist us with deciding the job these nourishments play in our lives. Zinczenko bolsters his contention about the job food play in his life by giving data about his pre-school weight. â€Å"By age 15, I had pressed 212 pounds of lethargic fat on my once slender 5-foot-10 frame† (392). Indeed, even Zinczenko accepts that, customers are as similarly liable for the manner in which they eat. Nonetheless, he keeps up his contention that the inexpensive food organizations exposed the more noteworthy duty. All in all, both the eater and the maker are liable for inexpensive food related weight, however I accept that the quick ventures should uncovered the more prominent obligation. Cheap food organizations must give their purchasers appropriate food marks that empower them to settle on educate choice about what they eat. Name ought not be misrepresented or misdirecting, as in the model giving by Zinczenko about the deceptive mark on the â€Å"chicken salad† (393). He alludes to the plate of mixed greens as not beneficial and that it is a caloric passing snare focused on eaters who won't suspect it. In spite of the fact that Balko makes some great focuses, his targets appear to me as an unfortunate chore. Zinczenko alerts that there are not many or no options in contrast to what we eat and that things need to change. Balko alerts that permitting food guidelines for marks implies letting the legislature among you and your waistline. In either case, we as a people have an obligation to consider what and how we eat.

Sensuality Versus Heroism essays

Sexiness Versus Heroism articles In the mid fifteenth century, craftsman Donatello shaped a male bare in bronze, David, utilizing Classical goals. Toward the finish of the fifteenth century this model was deciphered by another craftsman, Andrea Del Verrocchio. While the two figures depict David standing over the head of Goliath, this is the place the similitudes end. These two renditions of the scriptural subject are very different in the manner David is depicted, his clothing, just as the by and large inclination conjured from the two models. Verrocchio and Donatello both show David remaining over the leader of the killed Goliath. Donatello's David depicts him as an erotic figure instead of a legend. His blade is pointed descending close by, and his look also will be additionally descending. This makes it look as though he is modest about his triumph. Verrocchio's David, then again, depicts him as a legend, valiantly remaining over the head of Goliath. His look is additionally up and he The two craftsman's disparities in clothing on the two models additionally varies. Donatello leaves his model of David bare aside from a cap and boots. The pieces of clothing are barely recognizable because of the way that they are a delicate and engaging. Verrochio's David, nonetheless, is dressed in clothing reasonable for the fight to come. His piece of clothing is by all accounts that of a warrior The general inclination summoned from the two figures is the last contrast between the two. Gun Control in the United States - Free Essay Example

Gun Control in the United States In the year 2018 there have been 307 mass shootings around the United States. To put this into perspective, we are 312 days into the year, meaning the US has had nearly as many mass shootings as days in 2018, says Melia Robinson, Skye Gould and Samantha Lee from Business Insider. A more effective screening process for purchasing a weapon needs to be put in place to help prevent unsafe people from owning guns. Federal agencies do not have full knowledge of who is getting a background check to obtain a firearm due to a large portion of the United States that is not voluntarily providing background check information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Reporting information to federal agencies is optional, federal law does not require states to submit information to NICS; participation is strictly voluntary (Giffords Law Center). The way that the national and state firearm regulations are now needs to be addressed so that there is no longer a lack of background check information on a national basis. Information that would prohibit an unsafe person, even with a mental illness or disability, from purchasing a firearm is not voluntarily reported. A state does not have to report this information to make it known nationally and those documents will not be able to stop an unsafe person from passing a background check in another state if they choose to purchase elsewhere. These documents are not accessible because some states believe it is a privacy problem giving out a persons medical records. Providing this information to the NICS only gives out a persons name, date of birth and information about their mental state that is vague. No clinical information is given to the NICS, only enough information to identify the person and that persons problem that is preventing them from owning a firearm. Confidentiality still exists between a person and their health care professional. Another reason this is a problem is if someone wants to purchase a firearm in another state, they are able to do so by providing dishonest information when filling out a background check. There are currently no laws preventing this from happening. Since the last elections in 2010, as a result of the 2010 midterm elections, the rise of the Tea Party, and the subsequent reapportionment of state legislative districts, the balance of power in a number of state legislatures significantly shifted to conservatives opposed to firearms regulation and federal authority. (William 885). The year 2020 is the next time state legislative reapportionment will occur. There are currently four states that require a mental health screening along with their background checks and they are choosing not to report these documents to the NICS. Arkansas, Michigan, Ohio and Utah are the states that are participating in this and these states do not address disclosure to the NICS. Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, Missouri, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are not required to disclose to the NICS even though it is authorized. Time periods for reporting mental health records range from immediately to one month. Some states are required to report mental health records upon order from a court or in a timely manner. There is too much leeway in the urgency of reporting these documents. Changes that need to be made in the United States are not able to happen until the year 2020. If we can implement a screening process that involves federal agencies having complete access to all background check information in the United States, there will be less room for individuals to slip through the cracks. There of course have been an overwhelming amount of shootings that have been committed solely because of mental health of the assailant at the time of the incident. The United States has put mental health on the backburner in the recent years due to budget cuts and federal funding. In 2015, mental health care had taken an approximate $4.35 billion cut from their budgets. Reduction of these services could further link to more mass shootings with these ill persons readily having access to firearms. The state legislatures need to start incorporating resources to be available to the mentally ill. Raising awareness and educating the public could significantly help to reduce the possibility of these violent crimes. With the negative stigma that goes along with mental health, these people need serious medical help and should not be ridiculed for such thing. Having such resources or education available community wide would greatly help the chance of recovery. Putting forth effort, resources, and public education towards mental illness could begin efforts to alleviate the negative connotation and begin to get help to those in need before another eruption involving gun violence happens. Although mental healthcare is not a profitable branch of medicine, the bottom line is these people need help. The perpetrator receiving treatment in a timely and effective manner would help to prevent future violent crimes, whereas these behaviors and illnesses being ignored could lead to many more mass shootings. As a mother, its dismaying to realize children are no longer safe anywhere, under parental supervision or not. Places once thought of as excitement, such as a movie theater, shopping mall, school, church, etc. have all become places of mass gun violence. One step at time, the United States needs to start making strides to protect those children that will become our future. With the amount of mass shootings going on around the United States we need to bind together and rally around making a safe place to live. Without trial and error there is no true way to know what could help impact safety around dangerous individuals getting their hands on firearms. There should be a desire to enforce stricter laws to prevent those who have mental illnesses, those who have perpetrated domestic or animal abuse, and individuals with drug or alcohol charges from purchasing a deadly weapon. The gun violence restraining order (GVRO) has been trialed in California since 2014. California is the first state in the US to trial this new law and hopes to have more states follow their lead in the near future. This law gives the right to any spouse, whether by marriage or not, domestic partner, parent, child, any person related by consanguinity or affinity within the second degree, or any other person who regularly resides in the household (Frattaroli, Shannon) to file a GVRO after noting or observing behaviors in which potentially dangerous behaviors have been or are being exhibited. This complaint is filed through the civil justice system and a petition will be filled to remove these weapons from the charged person(s) by law enforcement. There are also rules set in place on how someone can go through the motions and make the right steps into possibly receiving their firearms back with lengthy psychiatric help or anger management style courses. This is a temporary restraint and does not conclude the named individual has committed a crime. While this law is not bulletproof, it does give guidance to hose surrounding a potentially dangerous individual a place to make their claims and have them heard. It happens all too often after these mass shootings that the family/friends note the shooter had been displaying some odd or dangerous behaviors beforehand but they chose to look the other direction because there was nowhere to report to. If even a small percentage of those shooters could have been investigated, that would be a win for society. The United States should adopt greater mental health screening to obtain a gun, just as other countries have done and have been successful. Many other countries around the globe have a mandatory mental health screening to be able to purchase a firearm. Found in the article written by Audrey Carlsen and Sahil Chinoy are the processes in which a citizen of a specific country must to do to obtain a firearm. If the United States were to follow the footsteps of some of these other countries, a great number of the mass shootings we have experienced may have been easily prevented. By looking at the different processes, many other countries have strict rules as to how to obtain a firearm, and that includes psychological tests and mental health screening. In the US, the process is extremely easy and takes almost no time at all. All that is needed to purchase a gun, according to the article written by Carlsen and Chinoy, is to pass an instant background check. Most states do require an extended background check but even with that step the process is not nearly as extensive and thorough as a lot of other countries. One country that this article talks about is Japan, which has one of the longest gun-purchasing processes. The second step in the process, again according to the article written by Carlsen and Chinoy, is to receive a note from your doctor that says that you are mentally fit to own a gun and have no signs of drug abuse. Japan makes sure that the person purchasing a firearm is in stable condition and shows no harm to themselves or others. The United States needs to make a change in how easily Americans can buy or obtain guns, and one way to do this is by adding additional mental health screening to the requirements to purchase a gun. Some people believe that mental illness has nothing to do with the mass shootings that we are experiencing as a country and that making the process to obtain a gun longer wont help. There are a lot of articles that talk about whether there is any correlation between mass shootings and mental illness, and a lot of these articles say that there are no connections between the two. People believe that the media blames mental illness to give citizens something to blame for these terrible incidents. An article by Rachel Nuwer titled Is There a Link Between Mass Shootings and Mental Illness? talks about how many mass killers have mental illness. According to Nuwers research, a 2004 study found that out of more than 60 mass murders, only 6% were mentally ill and the people that commit mass shootings account for less than 1% of the gun-related homicides. Nuwer uses a quote in her article from a professor and director of psychiatric and law program at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, Renee Binder. Binger says, When one of these horrible mass shootings occurs, people say Anyone who would do such a thing must be mentally ill. Binger then goes on to say that we need to be careful while using the term mentally ill because often the individual may have something wrong, but they arent technically mentally ill. As all these ideas make sense and seem right, often, mental illnesses go undetected and undiagnosed, so it is difficult to say that mental illness does play a role or not. The United States still needs to ensure that everyone buying a gun, of any kind, are in the right mind and capable of handling a firearm in the right ways. There are many solutions to this enormous problem we face in the US. These three following organizations explain ways to reduce or prevent gun violence. The Prevention Institute organization has 14 different ways they recommend the preventions of gun violence. They divided them into four different subgroups including gun safety: reduce the imminent risk of lethality though sensible gun laws and a culture of safety, the underlying contributors to gun violence: systematically reduce risks and increase resilience in individuals, families, and communities, the prevention infrastructure: ensure effectiveness and sustainability of efforts, and lastly new frontiers: continue to learn, innovate, and increase impact through research and practice. This website has three phone numbers for contacting them. Their main office in Oakland, CA (510-444-7738), Los Angeles, CA (323294-4527), and one in Washington, D.C. (202-747-3496). They also added a list of 20 other organizations that talk about gun violence prevention that they found helpful. Adopting other countries ways of gun control. The Dave Kopel organization explains the ways of Canadas gun laws. Canada for instance has a uniform federal firearms control system that, while stricter than the controls in the United States overall, is more lenient than some American jurisdictions. Back in 1974 there was an incident with two young boys that ran around with rifles in a public school, the Canadian government quickly responded with stricter gun control by passing a new law in 1977 that required all prospective gun purchasers to receive a police approval and have two-character references. They have a phone number (303-279-6536) and an email address ([emailprotected]) for any comments or questions. There has also been talk of having teachers being armed in schools for protection. The Action Network organization talks about the SB 383 bill. Part of the bill states that this bill would allow school personnel to have access to firearms in school safety zones if they receive authorization from the school board of directors, are licensed to carry a concealed firearm and have met certain training requirements in the use and handling of firearms. This legislation will not mandate a schools participation but will give school boards the ability to establish policy and put in place protocols needed to enable personnel to exercise their ability to access a firearm on designated school property. (action network)This is an interesting way of preventing school shootings. However, school shootings are all that would protect against with this new bill. Statistically speaking school shooting are less likely to happen in comparison to other kinds of mass shootings. This website has an email address ([emailprotected]) for the public to send their comments and questions to. These three organizations explain ways of preventing mass shootings. With a more effective screening process preventing unsafe people from owning a firearm, mass shootings in the United States will hopefully come to an end. Adopting mental health screening as part of the background check requirements will help make gun control more effective in the United States. This approach on gun control and proof of other countries having success with a more in depth background check give us hope for change. More effective methods should be implemented and should stop being ignored. Our voice will not be heard unless we all can come together as a nation to make that voice louder. Any form of participation to make these changes is a step in the right direction for a safer country. These changes could help save the lives of many in the United States. How to Reduce Academic Stress

Amidst all the aspects of college that students deal with on a daily basis -- finances, friendships, roommates, romantic relationships, family issues, jobs, and countless other things -- academics always need to take priority. After all, if you dont do well in your classes, the rest of your college experience becomes impossible. So how can you deal with all the academic stress that college can easily and rapidly put into your life? Fortunately, there are ways even the most stressed-out student can cope. Take a Good Look at Your Course Load In high school, you could easily manage 5 or 6 classes plus all of your co-curricular activities. In college, however, the entire system changes. The number of units you take has a direct connection to how busy (and stressed) youll be throughout the semester. The difference between 16 and 18 or 19 units may seem small on paper, but its a big difference in real life (especially when it comes to how much studying you have to do for each class). If youre feeling overwhelmed with your course load, take a look at the number of units youre taking. If you can drop a class without creating even more stress in your life, you might want to consider it. Join a Study Group You may be studying 24/7, but if youre not studying effectively, all that time spent with your nose in your books might actually be causing you more stress. Consider joining a study group. Doing so will help hold you accountable for getting things done on time (after all, procrastination can be a major source of stress, too), help you better understand the material, and help you combine some social time with your homework. And if there isnt a study group you can join for any (or all) of your classes, consider starting one yourself. Learn How to Study More Effectively If you arent sure how to study effectively, it wont matter if you study by yourself, in a study group, or even with a private tutor. Make sure that all of your efforts to study are matching up with what your brain needs to retain and truly understand the material. Get Help from a Peer Tutor Everyone knows those students in class who clearly are mastering the material -- and not having a problem doing so. Consider asking one of them to tutor you. You can offer to pay them or even deal in some kind of trade (maybe you can help fix their computer, for example, or tutor them in a subject theyre struggling with). If you arent sure whom to ask in your class, check with some of the academic support offices on campus to see if they offer peer tutoring programs, ask your professor if he or she can recommend a peer tutor, or simply look for flyers on campus from other students offering themselves as tutors. Utilize Your Professor as a Resource Your professor can be one of your best assets when it comes to reducing the stress you feel in a particular course. While it may at first be intimidating to try to get to know your professor, he or she can help you figure out what material to focus on (instead of feeling overwhelmed by thinking you have to learn everything in class). He or she can also work with you if youre really struggling with a concept or with how to best prepare for an upcoming exam. After all, what could be better for helping you reduce your academic stress than to know that youre super prepared and ready to ace the upcoming exam? Make Sure You Always  Go to Class   Sure, your professor may just be reviewing the material that was covered in the reading. But you never know what additional snippets he or she might put in, and having someone go over material you may have already read will just help to solidify it in your mind. Additionally, if your professor sees that youve been in class every day but are still having problems, he or she might be more willing to work with you. Reduce Your Non-Academic Commitments It can be easy to lose your focus, but the main reason you are in school is to graduate. If you dont pass your classes, you dont get to stay in school. That simple equation should be motivation enough to help you prioritize your commitments when your stress level begins to get a little out of control. If you dont have enough time to handle your non-academic responsibilities in a way that doesnt leave you stressed all the time, take a moment to figure out what needs to go. Your friends will understand. Get the Rest of Your College Life in Balance   Sometimes, it can be easy to forget that taking care of your physical self can do wonders for reducing your stress. Make sure youre getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising on a regular basis. Think about it: Whens that last time you didnt feel less stressed after a good nights sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a good work out? Ask Upperclassmen for Advice With Difficult Professors If one of your classes or professors is greatly contributing to, or even the main cause of, your academic stress, ask students who have already taken the class how they handled it. Chances are you arent the first student to be struggling. Other students may have already figured out that your literature professor gives better grades when you quote lots of other researchers in your paper, or that your Art History professor always focuses on women artists on exams. Learning from the experiences of those who went before you can help reduce your own academic stress.

Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Gary Leon Ridgeway and Charles Manson. These are some of the most infamous names in the history of murder, but they hid in plain sight, and Manson did not even commit murder. He was so manipulative he could convince others to do his bidding for him. How is that even possible? Surely one would be able to recognize someone who is such a dangerous threat or would they? One of the reasons these killers can be so successful is their ability to blend into their surroundings and at times even be considered a stand up member of the communities they live in, but what is going on inside their brains? Page and L. Lavon Gray Chapter 1: Summary: In this text, Hungry for Worship, authors Frank Page and L. Gray write about the hunger for worshipping God that all leaders should possess. In chapter 1, both authors begin the text with the concept of how the body has fallen in love with the method of worship and not the actual act of being in the Presence of God. They†¦show more content†¦They give examples from C.S. Lewis when discussing this subject. They quote Lewis with the term â€Å"Chronological snobbery†. This term means that while older generations only find value in the traditions and heritage of our faith, the younger generations only find relevance in what is current. They also write this type of separation between the young and old has effectively begun dismembering the body of Christ limb by limb. The authors also put focus on the act of individual preferences through church shopping. This according to Page and Gray, result in the encouraging of churches to offer consumer-driven programming in order t o keep members on their rolls. They give scripture which identifies the importance of unity. Ephesians 4:14-16 shows how the body of Christ should be unified in the midst of diversity. Leaders should work extra hard to keep the church family worshipping together. The authors condemn chronological snobbery and suggest that both the young and old come together. The young generation must grow up and the older generation needs to adapt. Analysis: The authors point out a huge problem that is alive and well in the church. Due to personal preferences, the church has separated itself from one another. Not only are different cultures separate but the age differences within the church are separated amongst themselves. In addition, all business profits and losses are reported on the owner’s personal tax return and are taxed at the owner’s effective tax rate. The business entity, itself, is not taxed separately. Given, that there are no formal requirements to establish this entity, a business license, an idea, sufficient startup funds and the desire to be a business owner are effectively all that are needed to become operational. This is no doubt why 70 percent of U.S. businesses are owned and operated by sole proprietors (Beesley). However, despite their large numbers, ease of formation and the entity not being taxed, sole proprietorships have the disadvantage of its owner having unlimited liability for business losses. While the Sole proprietor owns all the assets, he/she also owes all business liabilities in their entirety (Chow, 1942, p.157). This means that the owner’s personal assets can be used to satisfy business liabilities. However, business owners do have the option of purchasing a liability or umbrella insurance policy to offset or potentially eliminate the need to use personal assets to cover business losses. This liability insurance should include worker’s compensation, auto, general liability, and property and casualty coverage. Internal and external relationship in z for zachariah free essay sample

Z for Zachariah written by Robert O’Brien displays internal and external conflicts throughout the novel. The internal conflict built up character development as it showed the characters personality and thoughts, we discovered early in the story that Ann is a very powerful and intelligent teenager. The external conflict made a big dramatic impact on the book, as it showed the clash between the two main characters with Mr Loomis being the stereotypical male trying to overpower Ann physically. Both internal and external conflicts were both very important in different ways and are both vital for this story. Z for Zachariah was a very dramatic book due to the amount of external conflict between Mr Loomis and Ann. Ann had to face Mr Loomis while he was in various different states of mind, many when he was extremely angry. Mr Loomis wanted to over power Ann, and with him being a male and Ann being a female he assumed that he would be physically stronger. There were several physical acts in which Mr Loomis tried to overpower Ann, it started off on June the 24th when she asked him if he was married and he ‘grabbed’ her hand, then 4 days later on June the 28th Mr Loomis attempted to sexually assault Ann while she was sleeping, fortunately for Ann he was unsuccessful as Ann had awakened when she felt his presence in the room. Ann had to run from the house and live in the cave, trying out a system to share the valley with Mr Loomis with making minimal contact. About 10 days after the attempted sexual assault Ann walks up to the house about to start her daily routine, and stands in front of the house as she needed to ask Mr Loomis a question about keys for a padlock. It was then when was shot in the ankle by Mr Loomis from the upstairs window. These external conflicts between Mr Loomis and Ann made a big dramatic impact on the story. The external conflicts made the novel very suspenseful and exciting. The internal conflict in Z for Zachariah was a key factor for character development throughout the novel. The internal conflict in this story built up the main characters personality and traits, with Ann being very strong, enthusiastic and intelligent and Mr Loomis being selfish, ungrateful, and controlling. The story being written in diary form let the reader easily know how Ann was feeling about Mr Loomis’ actions. At the beginning of the book she was very cautious about approaching him and afraid knowing that someone was in the valley as she didn’t know if he was trustworthy, this was shown when she wrote in her diary ‘ I will go in the cave now and sleep. I am still afraid. And yet it is – what is the word I mean? companionable to know there is someone else in the valley. ’ (page 30) After time passed on Ann cared for Mr Loomis while he was sick, and was generally worried for his health. There were times during this book where Ann feared that Mr Loomis might not survive the night, and then there were also times when she was very happy, and felt optimistic about her future and even having thoughts about getting married with Mr Loomis, ‘Still, I thought, when Mr Loomis recovered from his sickness, there was no reason why we could not plan to be married in a year’ (page 89). As Mr Loomis eventually recovered and tried to sexually assault Ann she became very fearful and scared of him, she works out a way to share the valley while not living together, as this goes on she remains worried, and very afraid that Mr Loomis may turn on Ann and try to hurt her. Around the 10th day of sharing the valley Ann is shot in her ankle by Mr Loomis. She has to run for her life, worried that any second that her life could be over, she goes into hiding from Mr Loomis. Many weeks later on August the 6th she wakes up in a hollow tree that she has to sleep in as Mr Loomis found her cave, wakes up hopeful, having a plan to leave the valley as she cannot live in fear from Mr Looms. Which she does so, and when she left, she was hopeful, that she would find other life out there. The internal conflict through out this book gave a very good insight on Ann’s feelings and how her personality developed over Mr Loomis’ actions. The external and internal conflicts in Z for Zachariah were key factors for this novel and were both very important for different purposes. Both conflicts were just as important as each other, with the internal giving an insight on Ann’s thoughts and also character development, the external conflict made a big dramatic impact making the book very suspenseful and interesting. Both conflicts relied on each other as when there was external conflict between Ann and Mr Loomis there were the thoughts on the actions from Ann’s point of view. The conflicts in Z for Zachariah are both just as important, and are both needed for this story. Z for Zachariah is a suspenseful, exciting and interesting book containing external and internal conflicts. The two main characters had many differences with their personalities, which clashed throughout the book, causing external conflict which made the book very dramatic. The main theme throughout this story is power, in which Mr Loomis wanted to physically overpower Ann. The dramatic impact and character development from the external and internal conflicts were both very important and had their own different purposes. Z for Zachariah was very interesting, and exciting and has many lessons to be learned throughout the story.

Amalgam Definition and Uses

Amalgam Definition and Uses An amalgam is a type of alloy found in dentistry, mining, mirrors and other applications. Here is a look at an amalgams composition, uses, and the risks associated with use. Key Takeaways: Amalgam Simply put, an amalgam is an alloy of the element mercury. While mercury is a liquid element, amalgams tend to harden.Amalgams are use to make dental fillings, to bind to precious metals so they can be isolated later, and to produce mirror coatings. As with elements in other alloys, a small amount of mercury may be released by contact with an amalgam. Because mercury is toxic, amalgams may present health or environmental risks. Amalgam Definition An amalgam the name given to any alloy of mercury. Mercury forms alloys with almost all other metals, except iron, tungsten, tantalum, and platinum. Amalgams may occur naturally (e.g., arquerite, a natural amalgam of mercury and silver) or may be synthesized. Key uses of amalgams are in dentistry, gold extraction, and chemistry. Amalgamation (the formation of an amalgam) is usually an exothermic process that results in hexagonal or other structural forms. Amalgam Types and Uses Because the word amalgam already indicates the presence of mercury, amalgams are generally named according to the other metals in the alloy. Examples of important amalgams include: Dental Amalgam Dental amalgam is the name given to any amalgam used in dentistry. Amalgam is used as a restorative material (i.e., for fillings) because its fairly easy to shape once mixed, but hardens into a tough substance. Its also inexpensive. Most dental amalgam consists of mercury with silver. Other metals that may be used with or in place of silver include indium, copper, tin, and zinc. Traditionally, amalgam was stronger and longer-lasting than composite resins, but modern resins are more durable than they used to be and strong enough for use on teeth subject to wear, such as molars. There are disadvantages to using dental amalgam. Some people are allergic to the mercury or other elements in amalgam. According to Colgate, the American Dental Association (ADA) reports fewer than 100 cases of amalgam allergy have been reported, so its very rare. A more significant risk is posed by the release of small amounts of mercury vapor as the amalgam wears over time. This is primarily a concern for persons already exposed to mercury in daily life. Its recommended pregnant women avoid getting amalgam fillings. The ADA does not recommend getting existing amalgam fillings removed (unless they are worn or the tooth is damaged) because the removal process can damage existing healthy tissue and may result in the unnecessary release of mercury. When an amalgam filling is removed, a dentist uses suction to minimize mercury exposure and takes steps to prevent mercury from entering the plumbing. Silver and Gold Amalgam Mercury is used to recover silver and gold from their ores because the precious metals readily amalgamate (form an amalgam). There are different methods of using mercury with gold or silver, depending on the situation. In general, the ore is exposed to mercury and the heavy amalgam is recovered and processed to separate the mercury from the other metal. The patio process was developed in 1557 in Mexico to process silver ores, although silver amalgam is also used in the Washoe process and in panning for the metal. To extract gold, a slurry of crushed ore can be mixed with mercury or run across mercury-coated copper plates. A process called retorting separates the metals. Amalgam is heated in a distillation retort. The high vapor pressure of mercury allows for easy separation and recovery for re-use. Amalgam extraction has largely been replaced by other methods because of environmental concerns. Amalgam slugs may be found downstream of old mining operations to the present day. Retorting also released mercury in the form of vapor. Other Amalgams In the mid-19th century, tin amalgam was used as a reflective mirror coating for surfaces. Zinc amalgam is used in the Clemmensen Reduction for organic synthesis and the Jones reductor for analytical chemistry. Sodium amalgam is used as a reducing agent in chemistry. Aluminum amalgam is used to reduce imines to amines. Thallium amalgam is used in low temperature thermometers because it has a lower freezing point than pure mercury. Although normally considered a combination of metals, other substances may be considered amalgams. For example, ammonium amalgam (H3N-Hg-H), discovered by Humphry Davy and Jons Jakob Berzelius, is a substance that decomposes when it comes into contact with water or alcohol or in air at room temperature. The decomposition reaction forms ammonia, hydrogen gas, and mercury. Detecting Amalgam Because mercury salts dissolve in water to form toxic ions and compounds, its important to be able to detect the element in the environment. An amalgam probe is a piece of copper foil to which a nitric acid salt solution has been applied. If the probe is dipped in water that contains mercury ions, a copper amalgam forms on the foil and discolors it. Silver also reacts with copper to form spots, but they are easily rinsed away, while amalgam remains.
